1. Interview key departmental new hires from outside the organization to find out best practices from their previous organization.
2. Visit the store room to see which shelves are bursting at the seams. 50% to 70% of the time this could mean that there are supply utilization issues.
3. Follow a nurse for an afternoon to observe first hand where areas of waste are occurring on the floors.
4. Hold town hall type meetings with key employees to ask where they see waste and/or savings opportunities.
5. Make every month meaningful by making it a supply chain “Awareness Month,” e.g., Linen Waste Awareness, Reprocessing/Recycling Awareness, Product Waste Awareness, etc.
6. Send a letter to all of your vendors and ask them to step forward and provide you with utilization savings opportunities within their product lines.
